A Fan’s Perspective: Tiffany Fabiani of the band ENEMY OF FATE
November 24, 2024 - Recently, I had the opportunity to write a brief profile on the band Enemy of Fate, following the release of their latest single, "The Light." In my write-up, I highlighted the individual contributions of each band member, emphasizing their collective role in shaping the band’s signature sound—a blend of haunting melodies and powerful instrumentation.
While I discussed the band’s dynamic and the importance of every member, I intentionally refrained from delving deeply into the career of lead vocalist Tiffany Fabiani. I have dedicated a separate write up about her, as her artistry deserves special attention.
In preparation for this, I revisited past interviews and reviews of Fabiani, including podcasts—some of which featured my own interview with her. A common thread across these discussions was the comparison of her vocal style to iconic artists such as Stevie Nicks, Adele, Annie Lennox, and even Evanescence. Regrettably, I too once made this comparison, but after spending more time listening to her work and following Enemy of Fate through 2024, I now realize that such comparisons miss the mark entirely.
Earlier this year, I had the privilege of interviewing Fabiani, where we discussed her musical beginnings, sources of inspiration, and the importance of perseverance in following one’s dreams. A memorable moment was when she shared how she grew up listening to a myriad of genres of music, from singing classic jazzy songs with her grandmother, to turning her attention to the disco music her parents listened to. Then there was the unforgetable 80’s era and finally to the grunge era. Fabiani continued:
“My palette for music is very eclectic, but that’s how that started. Singing carried with me through my entire life. I just enjoyed it and it was a way to express things that were going on in my life.”
Her musical upbringing obviously lends itself to the depth of her artistic vision. During the interview, we also touched on the emotional connection listeners have with songs that resonate with their personal experiences. This connection is especially evident in the band's debut track, "Dear Dad," released in September 2023, which captures Fabiani's raw emotions regarding her estranged father—a theme that many listeners can deeply relate to.
Despite being a relatively new band, Enemy of Fate has made an immediate and impactful entrance into the Sacramento music scene. The band's impressive rise can be attributed to their unique sound—a powerful fusion of heavy metal, rock, nu-metal, and alternative rock, all accompanied by deeply evocative lyrics. With a group of very talented musicians, Enemy of Fate is quickly establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the music world. And I am here for it!

Tesla Brought Us Home with the “Keepin’ It Real” 2024 Tour
Sacramento’s own TESLA came home (sort of) with their “Keepin’ It Real’ 2024 Tour, playing to a packed house at The Venue at Thunder Valley in Lincoln, California last Saturday, November 9, 2024. And, in true style and fashion, TESLA rocked it.
TESLA’s Setlist from November 9th:
1. Rock Me to the Top
2. Modern Day Cowboy
3. Hang Tough
4. All About Love
5. Walk Away
6. Forever More
7. Heaven's Trail (No Way Out)
8. Miles Away
9. Changes
10. Paradise
11. Call It What You Want
12. What You Give
13. Song And Emotion
14. From the Heart
15. Love Song
16. Little Suzi
17. * Signs (encore)
Let’s start with the opening act: FUEL. If you grew up in the 90’s and you DON’T know who FUEL is, then your childhood was probably very boring. Now, you may not remember their name, but you would never forget their songs. Well, the band has been on hiatus and they have triumphantly returned with singer AARON SCOTT (from The Voice) on vocals, joining original members Carl Bell (guitar) and Kevin Miller (drums). FUEL’s latest album (I think released in 2022) Anomaly showcases the grunginess of the band in the 90’s with bursts of melodic hooks and a new freshness which perfectly sums up their set last Saturday night.
Some pictures of FUEL:
Next, TESLA took the stage. TESLA has always been respected for their musicianship, strong songwriting, and ability to adapt over the years. TESLA’S music is known for its sincerity and lack of over-the-top theatrics. They've built a loyal fan base that has supported them through the ups and downs of their career. And they were all there last Saturday night.
The “KEEPIN’ IT REAL” tour delivered an electrifying experience for rock fans, old and new alike. And, in true TESLA fashion, their energetic performance had the entire crowd on their feet and fist pumping wildly in the air (even security got into it!).
Their last studio album was “Shock” in 2019. The band has been continuously touring. Fronted by Jeff Keith, along with longtime members Frank Hannon, Dave Rude, Brian Wheat, and drummer Steve Brown, TESLA brought their high-energy performance to The Venue at Thunder Valley in Lincoln, California with a mix of classic anthems along with new material, staying true to the band's roots while celebrating their enduring legacy. I feel sorry for you if you missed this show. Check them out when you can!
Nervosa Brings “The Great American Jailbreak Tour 2024” to Sacramento
September 11, 2024 - Brazil's female metal band Nervosa brought their Great American Jailbreak Tour 2024 to Harlow’s in Sacramento last night and it was the best Tuesday night I have had in awhile! This is the thrash metal band's first North American headlining tour, which began in August and runs through mid-October. The tour spans the U.S. and Canada, hitting cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, Montreal, and Toronto (and, thankfully, Sacramento!).
The tour supports NERVOSA’s 2023 album Jailbreak, which has received praise for its raw, high-energy thrash sound and socially charged lyrics. The tour presents an electrifying show filled with fast riffs, intense drumming, and a powerful stage presence that is NERVOSA. The album speaks to breaking free from societal constraints and empowering self-determination. The tour is especially significant given Nervosa's evolution and lineup changes over the years, with PRIKA AMARAL now taking on vocal duties in addition to her role as lead guitarist. NERVOSA was supported by fellow thrash acts Vapor, Lich King and Hatriot. The bands did not disappoint! If you get a chance to see this tour, take it. You won't regret it.
Since I missed Vapor, I will start with HATRIOT, a thrash, heavy metal, death metal band from Oakland. CODY SOUZA, lead vocals and bad ass bassist along with the band, tore Harlow's in Sacramento up! This was my first HATRIOTIC experience so I couldn't tell you the name of the songs and I couldn't find their setlist (I looked) taped to the stage. But I was alone in this. The entire crowd sang almost every word to almost every song. I can tell you the band has the classic thrash sound with extremely powerful drumming, and high energy riffs. Since I was new to the HATRIOT scene, I dug up a little history: The band is from Oakland, California and was founded in 2011 by former Exodus singer Steve "Zetro" Souza and guitarist KOSTA VARVATAKIS. Due to other commitments, SOUZA left and since 2015, the band has been fronted by his son, CODY SOUZA with his other son NICOLAS SOUZA on the drums. VARVATAKIS and MIGUEL ESPARZA are on guitar, rounding out the band. Their set on this tour left the audience sweaty and ready for more.
Enter LICH KING! Formed in 2009, this band also has the classic thrash metal sound. Singer ZACH SMITH, vocals for LICH KING entertained the masses. Their style is old school thrash and the band is more playful with their lyrics than that of headliners NERVOSA, which made for an interesting pairing for this tour. The band consists of SMITH, along with BRIAN WESTBROOK on drums, JOE NICKERSON on guitar, NICK TIMNEY on lead guitar, and MIKE DREHER on bass. Again, the masses were pleased, singing along to almost every song.
Finally, the stage was ready for the all female new wave thrash band NERVOSA. Lead singer PRIKA AMARAL took the mic like she had been fronting the band since its formation. This is the first time the band has been on a headline tour and you could tell they are definitely in their element. AMARAL’s vocals are powerful and combined with riffs that blister and a mesmerizing stage presence fans get an in your face, punk-like “We are not going to take it” attitude (just look at some of the lyrics of the song “Jailbreak”:
“March to the beat
of your heart
This is your destiny’s call
No need to compromise
Be your own god.”
Overall, The Great American Jailbreak Tour headliners NERVOSA, along with VAPOR, HATRIOT, and LICH KING kicked bootie. NERVOSA consists of AMARAL on guitar and vocals, ELENI NOTA on the drum kit, HELENA KOTINA on guitar, and NATALIE NOVA on bass. I give this tour 9 out of 10 horns! Go see them. Support live music!
HANABIE Brings Harajuku-Core to California.
Hanabie at Ace of Spades in Sacramento, May 31, 2024.
On May 31, 2024, I went to Ace of Spades in Sacramento, California, to take photos of Tokyo’s own Harajuku-core band ( which means combining heavy music with harajuku aesthetics), HANABIE. I was lucky enough to interview the band before the show (check it out under the “interview” tab of this website!) so I was super excited to get to take photos of them. You can see the photos HERE.
The venue was packed for the sold-out show. OUTLINE IN COLOR and LEFT TO SUFFER had whipped the crowd into a frenzy. Though I missed OUTLINE IN COLOR's performance, I was front and center for LEFT TO SUFFER. When Taylor Barber, the lead vocalist, announced, "Whoever does the craziest sh*t in the pit will get free merchandise!" it sparked absolute chaos. Shout out to the security at Ace of Spades in Sacramento! The crowd was so hyped that they chanted for a full minute after the band's last song, demanding, "One more song! One more song!"
HANABIE took the stage a few minutes early and immediately captivated us with "O TA KU Lovely Densetsu," one of my favorite songs from the band. I discovered a few YouTube videos from that night, and someone clearly caught me dancing, clapping, and screaming to the song.
When YUKINA sang "GIRL’S TALK," the band’s latest single, the crowd erupted with excitement. YUKINA’s dynamic and versatile vocal range allows her to seamlessly transition between clean singing and intense growls. Her vibrato is mesmerizing, allowing her to capture the crowd’s attention and convey whatever emotion she wants you to feel in that moment.
I was able to get up close and personal with bassist HETTSU a few times (check the photos out!) and I got some awesome photos of her absolutely shredding her bass. Her “depth-defying” baselines and her stage presence help engage the crowd and immerse them into the aesthetics of the show. MATSURI's lightning-fast guitar riffs and vocals are as intricate and impressive as expected. Her sound complements YUKINA's in a way that clearly demonstrates their long-time collaboration. CHIKA is an absolute powerhouse on the drums. She keeps the band on tempo and her drumming is a key component to the synergistic performances of HANABIE. Even though she started with the band in 2023, CHIKA’s skill and stamina make her an essential part of the band’s live shows.
The May 31st show at Ace of Spades marked the tour’s final U.S. performance. Next, they head to Poland on June 5, 2024, followed by stops in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the UK, Italy, France, and Finland—all within the month of June! Overall, I’d rate the show/tour featuring HANABIE, LEFT TO SUFFER, and OUTLINE IN COLOR at Ace of Spades a solid 9 out of 10 horns up. I'd give it a perfect score, but missing the first band's performance was a real disappointment! It’s on me, I know, but it is what it is.
5/31/24 Set list:
1. O•TA•KU Lovely Densetsu
2. NEET GAME
3. Bukkowasu!!
4. Kotoshi koso Gal~Shoka ver.~
5. Ware Amatou
6. Reiwa Matching-sedai
7. GIRL'S TALK

Y&T: 50 Years of Rocking Through Time Anniversary Tour Rocked!
Rocklin, CA - The joint was rocking at the Quarry Amphitheatre in Rocklin, California on April 20, 2024. Oakland’s own Y & T, originally known as Yesterday & Today, kicked off their 50th Anniversary tour to a sold out crowd. Y & T is one of the legendary bands that have shaped what heavy metal/hard rock is today. And we were lucky enough to have front row seats!
Y&T's 50th Anniversary Tour was a nostalgic journey through decades of hard rock glory. As a fan of classic rock myself, attending this concert was like to stepping into a time machine and going back to the heyday of rock music. The venue itself, sharing space with the quarry with a lot of zip lines and rock climbing, provided a unique setting for such a monumental concert. The weather for an outdoor venue couldn’t have been better – for the crowd. The band had to wear sunglasses until the 4th song to prevent being blinded by the sun!
From the moment the band took the stage, it was clear that Y & T were here to celebrate 50 years of music and the enduring spirit of rock 'n' roll. Their setlist was a showcase of their illustrious career, a treat for us die-hard rockers. As usual, Dave Meniketti's vocals were as on point as ever, effortlessly hitting every high note with the same fervor as he did in the band's early days. By about the third song, Meniketti had grabbed his guitar and showed us amateurs how it’s done. The crowd ate it up. The rest of the band, consisting of bassist Aaron Leigh, drummer Mike Vanderhule, and guitarist John Nymann, proved to be a tight-knit unit, laying down a solid foundation of rhythm and melody that allowed Meniketti to do what he does best!
2 hours of classic rock ear candy began with "Open Fire", off of the 1985 album of the same name and, by the time the band belted out "How Long", the crowd was going insane, pushing up against the barricade as Meniketti fist-bumped anyone he could reach. Other highlights of the night included timeless classics like "Rock & Roll's Gonna Save the World", "25 Hours a Day," and "Gimme the Beat," ensuring the masses the band's legacy is strong.
The crowd, a mix of longtime fans and newcomers alike, was a testament to the band's enduring appeal. From headbanging to fist-pumping, there was an undeniable sense of camaraderie among concert-goers, united by their love for Y&T's music. I was standing next to a lovely couple that has seen Y & T perform live over 30 times! When asked why, they both grinned and said, “Wouldn’t you?” (Yes, I would).
Y&T's 50th Anniversary Tour at the Rocklin Quarry Amphitheatre was a celebration of everything that makes rock 'n' roll great: passion, energy, and a love for the music. Here's to another 50 years of Y&T, and may their legacy continue to rock on for generations to come.
10 out of 10 🤘🏼
Dethklok, Babymetal, and Nekrogoblikon Lowered the Boom on San Francisco!
Last week, Dethklok brought the "Babyklok Tour" to San Francisco for two nights, April 24th and April 25th. I attended the April 25th concert. Supported by Babymetal and Nekrogoblikon, the concert was nothing short of phenomenal, delivering an electrifying experience that left the audience in shock.
The show opened with Nekrogoblikon jumping on stage with their signature blend of melodic death metal with a little bit of goblin-themed theatrics. We laughed. We headbanged. We were captivated with high energy and a commanding performance of lead vocalists, John Goblikon (who is also an insurance agent!) and Dickie Allen. About five songs in, they began singing Dressed As Goblins. The entire Masonic erupted in chants of "Dressed as goblins! Dressed as goblins!" followed by a chorus of "Ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha hah!" The band's unique stage presence had everyone under its goblin-y green spell. Overall, Nekrogoblikon's set was an unforgettable "warm up" to this night - which shows you the power this tour punches. I certainly want more and will seek out Nekrogoblikon whenever they are playing anywhere near where I live. With their high energy antics, technical proficiency, and plenty of goblin poop (yes, I said poop), Nekrogoblikon has proven they are one of the most exciting acts in the metal scene today. If you ever have the chance to catch them live, don't hesitate – it's an experience you won't soon forget.
Nekrogoblikon was the first band on stage, prepping the crowd for the metal and J-Pop mash up that is Babymetal! In futuristic, otherworldly fashion, Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-Metal), Moa Kikuchi (Moametal), and Momoko Okazaki (Momometal) stoically walked onto the stage as fire raged behind them (on a screen). Babymetal knows how to command a stage, and their energy is infectious from the first note to the last. Su-metal's powerful vocals soar above the thunderous guitar riffs and pounding drums, while Moametal and Momometal's synchronized choreography adds an extra layer of visual excitement. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Babymetal's set was their ability to connect with their audience. Despite the larger-than-life production and the trio's commanding stage presence, there's still an air of intimacy to their performances that makes the fans feel connected to the band. Whether they're singing along to every word or waving glow sticks in time with the music, it's clear that Babymetal's music has struck a chord with fans around the world.
Finally, Dethklok took the stage. You know, that band that does not exist. Dethklok is so much more than a band - they're a force of nature. As the animated stars of the hit television series "Metalocalypse," they've captured the hearts and minds of metal fans around the world with their brutal riffs, thunderous drums, and over-the-top antics. Now imagine this force taking their act on the road for a live performance. From the moment the lights dimmed in the Masonic, it was clear this wasn't going to be an ordinary concert. Dethklok's live shows are a feast for the senses, with towering screens projecting animated visuals of mega destruction. Flames shooting everywhere as lasers light up the audience. But beyond the pyrotechnics and flashy visuals, the music sets Dethklok apart. With a catalog of blistering tracks that range from bone-crushing anthems to haunting ballads, they showcase their talent as musicians and songwriters with every performance. Dethklok's live set is a masterclass in metal excellence.
And then there's the connection between the band and their fans. Despite their animated personas, Dethklok has always had a deep appreciation for their fanbase. Whether they're inciting mosh pits with their ferocious energy or sharing a moment of quiet introspection, Dethklok knows how to make every fan feel like they're part of something special. Dethklok's live shows are an unforgettable experience that combines jaw-dropping visuals, ear-shredding music, and an undeniable sense of camaraderie between the band and audience. Thank you and a horns up salute to Brendon Small for creating this entertaining masterpiece (I still don't know when he finds the time to sleep!).
I give this show a 10 out of 10 horns!
Great White and Slaughter Elecrtify Hard Rock Live in Wheatland, CA
The iconic band GREAT WHITE brought their highly anticipated BITE DOWN HARD tour to Hard Rock Live in Wheatland, California Thursday, January 18, 2024. The band, now fronted by Alabama's uber-talented BRETT CARLISLE, delivered a performance that not only paid homage to their iconic 1980s sound but also showcased a renewed energy that resonated with both longtime fans and new audiences.
CARLISLE, proved to be perfect fit. At first I was skeptical that he would be able to deliver the songs I hold so near and dear to my heart. But he blew me away with how effortlessly he captured the essence of Great White's classic hits, making them sound as authentic and powerful as they did during the 1980's. CARLISLE'S stage presence and charisma added a fresh dynamic to the performance, seamlessly blending with the rest of the band. CARLISLE utilized the stage, making sure every fan in the house connected with his energy.
The band's ability to continually breathe new life into their timeless tracks while maintaining the nostalgic vibe just shows fans their enduring musical prowess. Hard Rock Live is one of my favorite venues to take pictures in and the atmosphere that night was absolutely electric, with the crowd singing along to every word and enthusiastically responding to the synergy on stage. The chemistry between the band members was palpable, creating a sense of unity that transcended generations of fans. From the powerful guitar riffs of MARK KENDALL, AUDIE DESBROW's high energy drumming, to the soulful ballads, Great White's performance was a rollercoaster of emotions, leaving the audience craving more. Yes, Great White's 2024 BITE DOWN HARD tour secures the band's status as rock legends, without question.
For both devoted followers and those experiencing Great White live for the first time, this tour promises an unforgettable musical journey that bridges the past and the present.
Did I mention yet that the concert opened with legendary band SLAUGHTER?! No? Oh, well it did. And I was there for it.
SLAUGHTER, known for such classic tunes as “Up All Night” and “Real Love” started the night with Mad About You and Burning Bridges, two of my favorite songs. And you cannot deny that MARK SLAUGHTER is as charismatic and energetic as he’s always been and his vocals are nothing short of amazing. Add into the mix the hard guitar solos and solid rhythm section and SLAUGHTER’S intense live show had me transported back in time. Finally, like GREAT WHITE, SLAUGHTER interacted with the audience, tossing guitar picks into the crowd and encouraging them to sing along. So, whether you are a devoted fan or a first-time listener, you were completely immersed in the SLAUGHTER experience and what it truly means to Rock On.
This concert is not to be missed!

THE NATIVE HOWL Turned Sacramento’s Ace of Spades Upside Down
The Native Howl at Ace of Spades, Sacramento, CA on December 5, 2023
The infamous ZAKK SABBATH kicked off their Tour Forever / Forever Tour in Sacramento at Ace of Spades on December 5, 2023. The tour opens with supporting band THE NATIVE HOWL. I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to take pictures of THE NATIVE HOWL so I thought I would review the band as well. To summarize, THE NATIVE HOWL is a Sonic Journey. A meshing of several genres of music. A band that creates an ENTIRE experience for the audience.
THE NATIVE HOWL is known for their distinct fusion of bluegrass, rock, and metal. The band, hailing from Michigan, consists of four members, each with exceptional musical talents! JAKE SAWICKI's ability to get quick riffs from the banjo and then, within seconds, grab his guitar while playing the harmonica and singing is beyond impressive! Bassist MARK CHANDLER, makes it look easy to keep constant rhythm, culminating in all musical elements harmoniously melding together. ALEX HOLYCROSS, the lead vocalist, belts out every song with the passion of ten men! And he does so with a distinctive voice – it is gritty, gravely – while playing the guitar and making sure to use the entire stage (while barefoot!) to ensure everyone in the audience gets to see and interact with their show. I was also lucky enough to get a few good shots of drummer ZACH BOLLING! He hit that kit with so much precision and passion, he makes it look effortless to navigate through the different styles and tempos this band is known for.
The NATIVE HOWL has such…energy! I didn’t get a chance to chat with the band before going on stage, so I asked people in the crowd, “Have you heard THE NATIVE HOWL before?” “What’s your favorite song?” I found out two very important things: 1. The band has a fan base that’s willing to travel to see them play because they are known for great music and lively performances; and 2. “Thunderhead” seems to be a well-liked song of theirs.
It seems to me the band has a genuine love for their craft which allows the audience to be fully engulfed in this kaleidoscope of colorful musical genres woven together in heart-stopping, head-banging, foot-stomping song after song. When I am lucky enough to witness artists that have genuine enthusiasm for their craft, it makes my photos turn out better, brighter, and makes me love my craft so much more. So, if you see me dancing in the Pit (photo pit, that is), and I stop taking pictures for just a second to clap and holler, leave me be. I’m in my happy place. THE NATIVE HOWL has a new fan in me, 100 percent!
THE NATIVE HOWL is currently touring with the ah-maz-ing ZAKK SABBATH on their Tour Forever/Forever Tour tour. If they come to a town near you, try to make it. I mean, try really hard! Both bands were well worth the wait in the long line. And, hey, buy a t shirt or three and support the arts!

MESHUGGAH Delivers an Insane Performance at HardRock Live
MESHUGGAH is a band that cannot be defined as only one type of metal. Since 1987, this Swedish juggernaut of progressive metal has been blazing their path with different approaches to music. The band is well-known for its intricate ability to provide contrasting rhythmic structures to their music. Add in drummer Tomas Haake’s precise patterns, Mårten Hagström and Fredrik Thordendal’s intricate guitar work, and Jens Kidman’s very distinctive growling, you have the unmistakable sound of MESHUGGAH.
MESHUGGAH’s music often explores the dark parts of the human psyche. Jens Kidman's guttural vocals deliver abstract and thought-provoking lyrics that compliment the intensity of the music, adding an additional layer of depth to the overall experience. The band’s fall tour, with IN FLAMES and WHITECHAPEL came to Hardrock Live in Wheatland on November 22, 2023. And the show was nothing short of amazing. While I know each band stands out because of their unique abilities to push the boundaries of their own musical existence (thanks to bands like MESHUGGAH for paving the way), what I did not expect is how effortlessly these bands complimented each other, providing an unbelievable show of complex sounds that leave you wanting more. WHITECHAPEL’s musical focus tends to be on the brutal and aggressive deathcore side while IN FLAMES and MESHUGGAH are more on the progressive metal end of the spectrum. This “throupling” gave me one of my favorite experiences of 2023 - a concert with many variants within the metal genre. All three bands have a strong fanbase in the U.S. - and a lot of those fans were there that night. Everyone I spoke with agreed this tour showcases bands that push the sonic experimentation envelope.
Not many stops left on this tour! If you have a chance to see this tour, do so. Below is a list of tour dates and a link to all three bands sites so you can get tickets, t-shirts, or something pretty for me! :)

Harm’s Way’s COMMON SUFFERING record release tour came through Roseville and it deserves a standing ovation
HARM’S WAY performs before a packed house in Roseville, California on November 12, 2023.
HARMS WAY is finishing up its record release COMMON SUFFERING tour and I had the opportunity to take pictures of the tour when it came to Roseville on November 12, 2023. I am glad that I did. Clique, Ingrown, Fleshwater, and Jivebomb made this tour a holistic four hours of high-energy punk, metal, industrial music with a rabid fandom and I. am. here. for. it! The supporting bands brought a mix of metal and punk and got the crowd sweaty and ready. The venue was packed by the time the first band ripped onto the stage so it is easy to say that all four bands had a huge fan following. Some fans I spoke with came up from Los Angeles, and some came over from the Bay Area, and several were from Oregon. There are pictures of all four bands on my Instagram (chel_evah) and I will post a few here. Check them out.
HARMS WAY was formed in Chicago, Illinois in 2006. Known for their heavy sound that combines hardcore punk with metal and industrial music, HARMS WAY delivers an aggressive, physically demanding show for both the band and their fans. Last Sunday I had a chance to witness the visceral connection between the fans and lead singer JAMES PLIGGE. It was an awesome sight to witness and I got a few photos of a couple of encounters - again check out my Instagram or the photo section of this site. The show was energetic and pulse-racing from the riffs emanating from NICK GAUTHIER and BO LUEDERS’ guitars, the bass riffs from CASEY SOYK, to the grooves from CHRIS MILLS’ drum kit - beginning to end, making this one of my favorite shows I have seen this year.
Their new album, COMMON SUFFERING, is the 5th studio album from the band and seems to recognize many experiences and issues I am sure we have all dealt with at least once in our past: mental health issues, relationship issues, and anxiety issues. Every track hits hard. Devour, track 4 on the album is something you need to hear. According to the band, “‘Devour’ is an expression of self-reflection following the realization that everything that was once there to give has been spent. Led down a path of deception and manipulation, one’s sense of self has been lost along the way. ‘Devour’ is the process of waking up to your isolation, with actions and purpose that are somehow no longer your own. It’s a crossroads that can lead you either the rest of the way down, or back to where whatever’s lost may be found again.” Yep. Sums it up nicely.

Aftershock Had Me Shook!
October 9, 2023 - Aftershock was this past weekend, October 5 – 8 th . In case you didn’t know, Aftershock (organized by Danny Wimmer Presents) has been one of the premier festivals celebrating rock, punk, and metal on the West Coast since 2012. It has grown from a one-day event to four days of non-stop awesome music. Four stages with bands starting at noon and the headliners singing until 10:30pm. People travel from across the country and world to have a chance to see this much talent in one place. This year I met people from Australia, Spain, and a lot of people from other states like Arizona, Colorado, and even Washington D.C.
I have attended the festival every year (except 2020 when they had to cancel due to da Rona) and every year there is at least one band on my bucket list. Two years ago I got 2 days of METALLICA which was absolutely phenomenal, last year was KISS and DANZIG, along with FALLING IN REVERSE, PRONG, and ROB ZOMBIE. And, while some groups backed out (Pantera, Corey Taylor) for different reasons, the four day festival was still a hit for me. This year’s headliners included rock and metal legends such as AVENGED SEVENFOLD, TOOL, KORN, GODSMACK, INCUBUS, RANCID, LIMP BIZKIT, and GUNS ‘N’ ROSES, to name a few. I mentioned earlier that Pantera and Corey Taylor backed out of the festival this year. Pantera stated this was due to “circumstances beyond our control.” They did, however, pledge to return for next year’s Aftershock, so I will have to wait for a bit longer. Corey Taylor released a statement that he had to back out because a few bandmates got Covid and he had taken a nasty spill at his last concert in Vegas and needed to heal. I certainly hope they all heal and we see them in California soon!
I always purchase the 4-day VIP pass for Aftershock. There is a dedicated area for VIP’ers between the two main stages, clean restrooms that are not portable outhouses, and its own dedicated food trucks and bar service. The diversity of foods was crazy! There were dumplings, “loaded” rice bowls, pizza, hot dogs, burgers, and chicken, to name just a few. The VIP section had fewer choices but there were still a few trucks parked there helping feed the VIP masses. The bar services was available inside the VIP area as well. Another perk. For me, purchasing the VIP pass is worth the extra money since I live only a few miles from the venue I don’t have to worry about hotel accommodations or eating at restaurants. Saving money!
Any band that wants to sell their merchandise can do so at Aftershock. This year, the merch booths were bigger so the lines moved relatively quickly. It took me about 30 minutes to get through the line and get my shirts (this is where I lose my money lol) and this year, I had to get GUNS ‘N’ ROSES, BABY METAL, GODSMACK, and TOOL. I will look totally cool in the poor house! Every year, I purchase the Aftershock foil poster and frame them and hang them on the wall of my “music room”. I did not get one in 2019 so if you know where I could get one, message me!!
The only thing that bugs me about Aftershock is I can NEVER get a photo pass to take pictures. I have taken pictures of some of the bands that played like CURRENTS and VARIALS, but not at Aftershock. So, my Instagram and Tik Tok (Chel_Evah) have a few photos and videos of RANCID, GUNS ‘N’ ROSES, and INCUBUS if you are interested. I will add some to my photos here on the first page as well. Someday they will say yes to the pass for me!
I just spent four days with good people, good food, and great music. It doesn’t feel like 150,000+ strangers because I met so many nice people that are now a part of my Festival Family. Cheers to next year when I will finally get to see Pantera (I hope) and other magical bands that make me feel all the feels!
The next Aftershock will be held October 10 - 13, 2024. To buy merch from this year’s Aftershock (not the band’s merch) and to sign up for emails about next year, go here: Aftershock 2024!

Metalcore Dropouts Tour with The Devil Wears Prada and Fit For a King Came to Sac and it was magnificent
September 21, 2023 - Last May, co-headliners The Devil Wears Prada (TDWP) and Fit For A King (FFAK) announced they were going on tour together. The “Metalhead Dropouts Tour” started last Sunday, September 17, 2023 at Ace of Spades in Sacramento, California. I purchased my ticket months ago, and it’s a good thing, because Sunday night was sold out!
I saw TDWP last March when they supported another one of my favorite bands, August Burns Red. I was instantly blown away and I became a fashionista, supporting all things Prada (TDWP-related, that is). Having them co-headline with another band I have always loved, FFAK, made this tour a dream lineup for me. Adding in two more bands, who I had not listened to, COUNTERPARTS and LANDMVRKS was definitely not a mistake. Both bands were excellent choices.
First up, LANDMVRKS. I had never heard them before and I quickly understood I was being spoiled hearing them live. This melodic metalcore band from Marseille, France had me at 'Oui'. Since this was my first time hearing LANDMVRKS, I didn't know what to expect. Vocalist Flo Salfati had me mezmerized. The band's style (to me) is reminiscent of Linkin Park, one of my favorite bands. And, although this was my first time hearing them, it was clear by the crowd, that LANDMVRKS is followed by many. Almost the entire front row were singing right along with Salfati! The band’s crushing percussion and dueling guitars complement Salfati’s extensive vibrato. I got the shirt. I got the album. I am now a fan. Merci Beau Coup, LANDMVRKS!
The energy in Ace of Spades was absolutely electric as Hamilton, Canada's own metalcore band, COUNTERPARTS took the stage. Formed in 2007, COUNTERPARTS has consistently turned out solid music of emotionally-charged, brutal reality, and their set that night was no exception. Brendan Murphy's voice commands your attention and his consistent use of the entire stage to ensure as much crowd participation as possible leaves nothing to the imagination. Chaotic, loud, energetic are three words that can best describe their performance. COUNTERPARTS, in my opinion, is a band that you MUST see live. No excuses.
After COUNTERPARTS, it was time for co-headliners FFAK to take the stage. Formed in 2007, American Christian metalcore band from Tyler, Texas came out swinging with their popular hit 'Annihilation'. The entire crowd screamed "Rebuild! Redemption! Welcome annihilation!" Lead vocalist Ryan Kirby has a unique style where he can go from a primal scream in one breath to singing clean the very next breath. The band's lyrics are hard-hitting. 'Reaper' is one of my favorite songs from FFAK. You can actually feel the words.
"Oh God, I've got a story to tell; I've touched his hands, let him drag me to Hell; Oh, God is there a soul to steal? It's wrapped in death, the reaper is real."
Amazing song with thought-provoking lyrics. If I wasn't already a fan of FFAK, this song would have sealed it.
By the time TDWP took the stage, I was exhausted, sweaty, and ready for more. TDWP has been a favorite of mine since I heard them earlier this year. From Dayton, Ohio, TDWP shows you just where Christian metalcore can take you. You don’t have to believe in a higher power to understand their lyrics are universal. In their song ‘Salt’, TDWP questions what is real, and tries to explain how we have all felt at one time – trapped, unable to find the right words, trying to find ways out of the confinements of our own minds, our mental and physical health. Mike Hranica’s guttural vocals paired with Jeremy DePoyster’s vocals and chaotic energy are apropos for the lyrics,
“Pour the salt into the wound; Let the rain wash over you; If everything I said was true; Then why am I paralyzed?”
The lyrics are vivid, relatable, bringing to the surface the pain and confusion felt by many but rarely recognized. The instrumentals of TDWP are often explosive, fast-paced, and Hranica’s and Jeremy DePoyster’s vocals bring the fan full circle and up in our feels. I can’t even begin to explain the surge of energy that poured out of Ace of Spades the other night. This tour is special. This tour is not to be missed. Dead Register Brought Post Punk To Sac!
DEAD REGISTER from Atlanta Georgia, at Cafe’ Colonial Friday, September 8, 2023
DEAD REGISTER West Coast Tour came to Cafe’ Colonial and it was epic!
Tortured! Gloomy! Pretentious! All words describing DEAD REGISTER a post punk, goth, industrial rock band fronted by Chv Chvasta and Avril Che and Greg Meisenberg on the drums. The trio of talent hail from Atlanta Georgia and Sacramento was one of their stops mid-tour.
I didn’t know what to expect heading over to Cafe’ Colonial to photo the band in action. All I knew is the lighting in there sucks for photography and since it is in poor taste to use a flash, I was a bit apprehensive about capturing pictures. When I got there, a good-sized crowd had already assembled to support the opening bands Drezden, Venetian Veil, and Sacramento’s own Tentacult. Small pits forming for the regulars to thrash about, the room was full of infectious energy. I don’t pit, but I appreciate a good outlet for angst.
I got to Cafe’ Colonial in time to check out Tentacult. “Cleansing the palatte” for DEAD REGISTER, this Sacramento death metal band absolutely crushed it. I have a few photos of them on my Instagram account (@Chel_Evah) if you want to check them out . Then DR came on to the stage and I positioned myself next to Avril. It was awesome to watch her create! There’s video and more pictures on my Instagram account as well so you can see her in action. Chv was singing and playing just to her right. I got the best pictures from him (it’s the hair for sure!). Set back just a bit, and in the middle of the stage, was Greg. The video explains Greg’s talent. His playing is the perfect compliment for DR (and he plays barefoot too!).
I was fortunate enough to chat with each band member before they went on. I learned the band has been around for about 8 years and Greg just started with DR in January of this year and was able to pick up and learn all of the songs for this tour in a short amount of time. I also bought one of their cool t shirts (ALWAYS support the Arts, people - if you can). I left just as the set was winding up BUT I should have stayed and asked a ton more questions of this Trio of Talent! And, they would have allowed me to do so, because as dark and gloomy and goth-y as they are, they are also equally as nice. GO SEE THEM! Below are links to tickets for the remainder of their tour and a link to their merch so you can get a shirt (the "Classic Iconic” is the way to go!) and we can be twinsies!!

Sacramento’s WILL HAVEN kicked off their Carpe Diem/VII Tour in their hometown of Sacramento, California
Will Haven Carpe Diem/VII Tour
“Now’s the time to take a look/At what surrounds/ And embrace the hearts/ Of the ones in your life” - Carpe Diem
August 28, 2023 - Sacramento’s WILL HAVEN kicked off their Carpe Diem/VII Tour in their hometown of Sacramento, California last Thursday. The venue, Old Ironsides, is the oldest bar in town and it is proud of the “Best Dive Bar in Sacramento” title. And for good reason! The food is good and the live music is even better!
Enter Will Haven! A Dark Metal band formed in 1995, WILL HAVEN is touring in support of their acclaimed seventh LP, VII, which saw release in July through Minus Head Records. Arguably WILL HAVEN’s heaviest and darkest material to date, the ten songs on VII take longtime fans back to their earliest records, while expanding on the atmospheric and immersive qualities of the band’s output.
WILL HAVEN plays tomorrow night in San Diego at Brick by Brick. Go see them if you are in town. If you miss them, they have several other tour dates coming up, like August 31st at the iconic DNA Lounge in San Francisco. Then, after that, they are gone from California. Maybe you can catch them in the UK?

Ghost with Amon Amarth Kick Off the Re-Imperatour U.S.A in Concord California
So, I dragged my 13 year old son to the opening night of the band Ghost’s Re-Imperatour U.S.A tour last night at the Concord Pavilion in Concord, California. And I cannot get over it. I can’t!.
This was the first time in 5 years the band from Sweden has been in the Bay Area. And they brought with them Amon Amarth, the Vikings of Metal. Let’s start with them. Their set was phenomenal. The Viking helmet and ship on the stage were accompanied by large statues and then a giant serpent of the sea. The lightning, the thunder, Viking on Viking violence, Amon Amarth was ready to kill their set. When Johan Hegg screamed, “Raise your horns!” and took a drink out of his horn, we all went insane. Then there was the rowing. The ENTIRE crowd swayed back and forth as if they were rowing the Viking ship. It was majestic AF! Skål!
We were all ramped up. And then it was time for the Ritual. Tobias Forge, under the persona Papa Emeritus IV, launched into Imperium as soon as the curtain dropped. The stage was set like a cathedral, ready for the sacrifice. The Nameless Ghouls’ masks look like a devil with a steampunk gas mask on. The set list was a mix of their work, including the crowd favorite Rats. Even my son was raising a fist! Absolution had us all dying to reach the sun.
I would say that if you have the time, you MUST go see this tour! For a list of upcoming tour dates and to buy merch, go here: https://ghost-official.com/
I did not have a photo pass for this show, so my pics are from my cell phone and I have put them in the gallery on this site. To see video clips of the bands that I recorded with my cell phone, visit my Tik Tok here: https://www.tiktok.com/@chel_evah/video/7262981135762836779

August Burns Red 20th Anniversary Tour
I went to see August Burns Red March 2, 2023 at Ace of Spades in Sacramento, California. The 20th Anniversary Tour is a celebratory compilation of their best songs. Your Little Suburbia is one of my favorite songs and the energy put into that performance was LEGENDARY! They are playing in Columbus, Ohio on August 8th. Check them out!

Whitechapel May 4, 2023 at Ace of Spades, Sacramento, CA
Deathcore band Whitechapel is headlining their first tour in four years! Supported by extreme brutal bands Archspire, Signs of the Swarm and Entheos. I got to experience the tour at Ace of Spades last May and the energy level at the venue was palpable. This band is Always reinventing itself to be one of the strongest deathcore bands I know. If you missed them, don't worry! They are coming BACK to Northern California November 22, 2023, supporting the Almighty MESHUGGAH at Hard Rock Live Sacramento. See you there! Boom! 🤘🏻🖤🤘🏻

Verminous Remnant -The Black Dahlia Murder Tour
Verminous Remnant - The Black Dahlia Murder Tour!
I spent Mother’s Day getting my ear’s annihilated by The Black Dahlia Murder at the Ace of Spades in Sacramento, California. If you haven’t heard this melodic death metal band from Michigan, you are missing out. I am only a few years in to photo shooting and reviewing metal bands, but these guys hit different. With frontman and former guitarist for TBDM, Brian Eschbach holding his muthaf*#king own since the passing of Trevor Strnad, the Verminous Remnant tour showcases absolute killer riffs. Removal of the Oaken Stake was one of my favorite songs in the lineup. TBDM, as well as the awesome lineup of supporting bands Terror, Frozen Soul, Fuming Mouth, and Phobophilic made this the hardest, heaviest show I have ever had the pleasure of photographing. And I’d do it again! BOOM!
